Department of Social Structures

Brief Information about the Department.
As a successor of Sociological Department, Institute of Philosophy of the NAS of Ukraine, which was one of the first centres of sociological thought in Ukraine, the department has worked since the middle of 1980's. Its leader was V.F.Chernovolenko, Candidate of Philosophy, famous Ukrainian sociologist. Since 1991, S.A.Makeev, Doctor of Sociology, has been the Department Director.
Fields of scientific interest of the department are the following: the social-structural and social-stratification events and processes taking place in Ukrainian society of recent decades, tendencies of social mobility, the profession and occupation prestige dynamics. In 2001, the department finished the project "Status and Professional Identities: Destruction and Construction" and started the new project "Tendencies of Social Institutions Establishment and Transformation".

Director of the Department - Sergiy O. Makeev, Doctor of Sociology. Dr. Makeev is well-known due to his works on social mobility, social-class structure, labor sociology and political sociology.
In this field, Dr. Makeev has worked for 25 years which resulted in numerous books, articles and scientific collections published in Ukraine, USA, Germany, Hungary, Russia. He is a member of editorial boards of the following journals: 'Sociology: Theory, Methods, Marketing' and 'Political Thought'. He is a member of Specialized Boards on Doctor Theses Defense in the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine and of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University.
