Brief help about the Division
The Division of Sociology of Culture and Mass Communications exists from the date of organization of Institute of Sociology NAS of Ukraine (1990). It was headed by the known Ukrainian sociologist, the doctor of Philosophy, professor A.A.Ruchka.
The Division has been concentrated the attention on the complex researches of problems of social–cultural development of the Ukrainian society. In 1990 there were realized the researches of value priorities of mass consciousness of the Ukrainian population, defined the factors of creation of its cultural – communication orientations as well. In 2000 the research theme « The Legitimation of Identities in Multicultural Space of Modern Society», dedicated to study the problematics of identities was completed. Now the theme «Socio–Cultural Differentiation of Modern Ukrainian Society: Criteria, Mechanisms, Consequences» has being fulfilled in the Division. The theoretical outcomes of researches data are taken out in numerous publications and reports of the scientists of the Division in many National and International conferences.

The following results were obtained:
- The conceptual and ontological basis of the socio–cultural identities and identifications construction was clarified;
- The specifications of socio–cultural identities in a context of globalization processes were considered;
- The status and features of existence of various identities in the multicultural space of modern Ukrainian society (natio–territorial, socio–cultural, value, ethnical, ethno–cultural, linguistic, politico–ideological, electoral, social) were investigated;
- The mechanism of mass–media’s legitimization practices and tendencies of population’s cultural practices was analyzed.

Besides that two scientific monitoring programs are being carried out as well: “Axio–Monitoring.” (since 1991) and “Monitoring of the Ukrainian Population’s Involvement in Cultural Life” (since 1994). The Supervisor – Doctor of Phylosophy, Professor A.A.Ruchka.
